SisterSpeak Online Magazine, an award winning lifestyle e-zine for women of color, announces Black Women's Wellness Day to be observed on Friday, May 22, 2009, 1:30pm-5:00pm at the Bowie Public Library, Bowie, MD.

This year's inaugural observance, following on the heels of National Women's Health Week and Mother's Day, is hosted in honor of Roberta W. Peyton,  mother of SisterSpeak Online Founder Lisa Peyton-Caire, who passed away on May 22, 2006 from complications related to heart disease. The event will pay homage to Ms. Peyton and other women who have succumbed prematurely to disease and illness, while serving as a springboard to a new legacy of wellness for the next generation of Black women.

"I could think of no better way to honor my mother's life and memory than to spend this day in the act of healing for myself and other Black women. We owe it to ourselves and to our foremothers to choose life over death, wellness over illness, and to love ourselves enough to place our health and well-being at the top of our list of priorities", says Ms. Peyton-Caire.

The event's theme, Building a Legacy of Wellness for Life, will unfold through an inspiring yet casual roster of conversations, presentations, testimonies, and informational offerings for contemporary Black women seeking encouragement, support, and practical tips for living well and building healthy, life-sustaining habits.

"For each of us who has known and loved Black women who have suffered or perished at the hands of an illness, we say 'no more'. The buck stops now. We will build a new legacy of life and wellness, and we'll pass this legacy down to our daughters and granddaughters for generations to come. It's time for a new story".

Black Women's Wellness Day 2009 is an extension of SisterSpeak Online's mission to inform, inspire, and empower Black women to create and sustain lives of boundless beauty, passion, power and purpose. With the event, Ms. Peyton-Caire hopes to influence the behaviors and experiences of Black women towards a culture of wellness.

"We want the impact of this event to be immediate and very personal for every woman who attends because our need for healing and wholeness is immediate. Enough time has been spent talking about the disparities, the challenges, and the casualties. It's time to choose life, and to make life possible by changing our behaviors and attitudes today".
